Long time lurker, first time poster here.
It was recently suggested to me by a fellow Oppo that after lurking for the better part of a decade, perhaps I should make an account and join in on the fun. Over the years of just reading everyone’s automotive adventures, its become clear to me you all are a group that’s pretty excellent to each other, and the variety of interests is seriously top-notch.
BrokenMostWeeks refers to my addiction to vehicles that always turn into absolute money pits, whether they’re of the Bavarian variety or not . The perfect example of this, however, is my old BMW E36 M3 track car (pictured) that, aside from a few autocrosses , has yet to see an actual track due to constant... uh... ‘necessary improvements’ .
So anyways, hello to you all, and I look forward to joining in on the fun I’ve been following for quite some time.

Welcome! I’ve slowly gone back in time on my Bavarian interests....From 2000 to 1998 to 2015 (that was a lease) to 1988. So far the E28 is by far the cheapest and close on reliability.

Well now that’s a thought-provoking question...
Hmmm. Personally, the WJ Overland being traded for that blue XJ would probably be a no for me, as I already have a manual XJ. Also, I kinda like the different driving experiences- the WJ Overland is an absolute couch of an automobile. I’ve tried to build it up as a modern Grand Wagoneer or the American version of a Land Rover Disco.
That is a nice opposite from the more, eh, visceral experience of my manual XJ.

Every time I see your car, I have to check to make sure I’m not drooling on myself... That. Is. Gorgeous.
There’s a stupid clean
Toledo Blue E39 nearby that I’ve considered snagging as a road-trip missile, and seeing yours doesn’t help me not want to go further down the BMW rabbit hole.

All this said, if I didn’t have my Overland, I’d be looking pretty hard at that blue XJ... if its as clean as it appears, that’s a pretty solid build list.

I just see that as a better way to hear that S54 glory ;)
I don’t remember what part of the country you’re in, but E30s around here in NC, they’re
still fairly cheap (for today)- about $5k for a decently clean, yet ‘project’. Let me know if I can help in the search!
Tripper
> BrokenMostWeeks
09/24/2020 at 11:16 | 0 |
Yeah, I’m not complaining!
I’d be in the sub $7500 market and wouldn’t balk at an automatic particularly a rust free one. that 5 speed swap is common and easy enough. It would be dumb for me to buy now as I’m about a year away from having space to work on a project like that, however it something really nice or really cheap (mainly the latter) I’d make a move.
I would even take a 318 if its older and sporting an M10 as I can use some of the parts as backup for the 02.

I had a
2006 E90
330i Sport, and I regret selling that one every single day.
Good thing you’ll still have access to it! And definitely buy it back when you get the chance. That E90 M3 is one special machine we’ll probably never see again. A modern, small E39 M5!

I just saw a manual 325 sedan for $4500 the other day. Definitely a project, but a driveable one that didn’t look bad at all. Any preference towards coupe or sedan?

That’s not bad...that poor dash. There is a company that is thermoforming NEW bmw dash panels for 2002's and E30's...they are however, not cheap. My 1502, miraculously has a crack free dash. People at work are always like why is there a towel covering your dash!?...
I’d prefer a coupe but wouldn’t rule out a sedan.

It is certainly a half cage. I’ll have to write a post about the car as a whole and the adventure to get it, but someone threw ALL the expensive stuff at it and I bought it for what is I’m sure less than half what they spent

Welcome to Oppo! If your affinity for broken B avarian machines is any indication , you’ll fit right in here.
Feel free to unleash some posts on us. You don’t have to purely chronicle your own adventures (we can’t all be Miss Mercedes) but it seems you definitely have some stories to tell about your money pit(s).
I just own a boring compact car so I have to get a little more creative in what I post here. I really enjoy making DOTS posts. You’ll find a niche that you like.

I am usually quite a frequent DOTS contributor but I am currently living in Atlanta proper and so I have a choice of boring sedans and the occasional donk with some motorcycle stunts thrown in. I don’t see many classics. I haven’t had a good DOTS in well over a week but the cool cars do come out on weekends so we’ll see.
I found I actually enjoyed street spotting way more when I had a reason to snap a picture. Plus it's great to see some of the other stuff from fellow Oppos that you wouldn't believe is out there without photographic proof. Like that NSU Prinz Sport spotted last week.

Thanks, though I have to admit it was mostly bought not built. I was lucky to find one in Austin owned by the proprietor of one of the best BMW shops in central Texas, Terry Sayther.
It will look better once I get the front clip back on, here is the current state:
Need to get another coat of primer on, sand again, then paint. Also, since this my first attempt at doing this it will likely take a few tries...

Hey, ‘
bought not built’ isn’t always the worst thing in the world, especially when it comes to old BMWs...
I’ll be the first to admit that someone else turned my M3 into the track car it is today- which is fine because they used way better parts than I’d be able to afford, and I still got it for cheap!
The way I see it, your car was just properly sorted, and that’s a very good thing. It’ll look great with the front end back together and fresh!

“

Hahaha I know this feeling all too well! I’ve driven E46 M3s too, but these old E36s just have something special about them, definitely a more raw experience, especially when they’re turned into things made for track work.
My goal is to just make my car nicer and more usable- its a total track car, but one with good parts. I want to make it more street-friendly so I want to drive it more, but also just make it nicer to look at and drive longer distances. The E36 crew over at the ‘Ring have some super clean builds that I’m shooting for
